Full Federation Special Subject Meeting

Held on 19th September 2006

Sue Hodgson, deputising as chair opened the meeting. She then asked if anyone objected to Councillor Bob Metcalf sitting in on the meeting and asked him to give reasons why he was here. He explained that being a councillor and sitting on various committees as well as being chair of Trans Pennine he wanted to hear what tenants were being told from the Council.

No one objected to him being there.

Tonight's Subject Is Waste Strategy

Robert Turner, waste strategy manager with Calderdale Council was introduced.

He started by saying it was a pleasant surprise to see so many had turned up, and that our opinions would be of value.

All the information that is given to-night can be obtained on the council web site, from libraries or any council office.

He gave an outline of the government directive to recycle more waste, to cut down cost and to cut down on pollution. It is not necessarily true that every dwelling will have a wheelie bin. He realises that for many reasons this is not feasible, the geography of the many villages and small towns within Calderdale makes it very difficult to make a decision which way to go. High rise flats pose a problem because there is nowhere to introduce recycling bins or tenants do not have access to the bin areas.

When a plan has been decided on it could mean that there are less collections of general household waste because recycling collections would take place in between.

There is money to be made in recycling glass and paper in particular at the moment some other waste products Japan are willing to buy at a price. At the present time most of Calderdale's rubbish goes to Lancashire land fills. Negotiations with Bradford are taking place this would mean a considerable saving if it went through.

Many questions were answered and ideas put forward after he had finished his presentation.

Thanks were given to him for in most a clear outline to the problem.

Sue then asked Pennine staff and Bob to leave.

The subject of not being able to contact staff or the fact that they have been moved without tenants being notified had been a topic this afternoon at a management meeting, was anyone else experiencing the same problem, it would seem to be a common problem, it was therefore suggested that Tom or Amanda be invited to a future meeting.

Are you happy with the venue, a mixed reaction but in main no, reasons much the same as the managements. Can anyone come up with another venue?

Meeting Closed at 8-30pm

Date of next meeting should be 25th October.
